2022 Abbott Dash to the Finish Line 5K

Twenty-six Harriers raced through the streets of midtown Manhattan for the 2022 Abbott Dash to the Finish Line 5K, which doubled as the USATF 5km Road Championships. The weather was mild and somewhat humid – and there would be similar conditions for the following day’s NYC Marathon.

Scoring for the 5th place women’s team were Abigail Carney, Mirjam Lablans, Louise Xie, Tara Jarvis, and Ari Scott. The 6th place men’s team were led by Hanon Jhung, Matthew Waaland, Liam McBride, Jason Teran, and Cheyne Eugenio.

Abby Carney came away with a two-second PR just weeks after her previous PR. She credits Harriers Mirjam Lablans and Dan Goldstein with helping her achieve this: “Major thanks to Mirjam and Dan for pacing me through the first two miles. That was really special and I don’t think I could’ve kept my pace without them.” With a 20:05, Abby is hoping to break 20 in 2023.

Mirjam also ran a 5K PR of 20:31 – seven seconds better than her previous. Ari Scott had the opposite kind of race where she came 7 seconds short of her 5K PR, set this past May. First-time Dasher Ari noted that she had no idea how fast she was running for the first two miles due to GPS issues, so she ran somewhat faster than expected and struggled to hold on through mile 3, especially with the uphill into Central Park. However, miles 1 and 2 made her realize that she is “capable of more than I’d thought” – and that’s why we run, isn’t it?

Despite placing first out of all the Harriers, Hanon Jhung considered it a “tough race” for him, noting the crowding around the first turn made it difficult for him to “kick it into top gear until it was too late.” But Hanon more than made up for it by racing the NYC Marathon the very next day. Two hard races two days in a row? If you’re Hanon, it’s not an issue.

Congrats to all the Harriers who raced (or just ran easy!) the Dash, and thank you our killer cheer squad on 6th Avenue!
